No. 5: WBB Upsets Sea Lions

Down to the Top Five!! Our countdown of the top UH Hilo games of 2019-20 takes us today to No. 5 when the women's basketball team stunned unbeaten PacWest leader Point Loma at the Civic.

On January 4, the Vulcans were playing their second game of the new calendar year, and the task was daunting against the Point Loma Sea Lions, whom they had just lost to by 32 points (78-46) on December 12 in San Diego. The Sea Lions came to Hilo with a 5-0 record in the Pacific West Conference and they were on an eight-game winning streak. They hadn't lost a game since November. But the Vulcans had already shown signs that they were a different team in 2020, having knocked off Fresno Pacific (63-51) just two night earlier to pick up their first PacWest win of the year (1-4). On this night, Mandi Kawaha had 20 points (17 of them in the second half) and Allie Navarette had a double-double with 19 points and 13 rebounds to help pull off the stunner.
